New Luxury Spa for a New Bangkok Mall

The brand new and first Namm Spa from the Dusit Group has found a spacious home in Bangkok’s latest, shiny, new mall, Samyan Mitrtown Hall…

In Bangkok, you can quite literally shop til you drop, with all of the very many shopping malls. Consumers are regally spoilt for choice, in this bustling city. With all the chaos and tumult around Bangkok, the desire to find convenient urban respite, in a calm, soothing environment, manifests as a strong and consistent urge there. Thankfully, spa-culture in Thailand is a much valued and easily accessible commodity. Just as the wealth of shopping opportunities abound, so too do the spas.

A new example of Thailand’s well-deserved spa acclaim is Namm Spa, brought to consumers by the Dusit group, owners of the luxurious Devarana Spa brand. While Namm Spa has equally well trained staff, to the same exacting standards, this new stand-alone spa is Devarana’s slightly more affordable younger sister, located within a shopping mall, rather than in one of their hotels or resorts. This is great news, especially while Devarana Spa, in Bangkok, is undergoing complete reconstruction, as part of the re-build of Dusit Thani Hotel.

September 2019 saw the opening of Samyan Mitrtown Hall, at the Samyan Mitrtown complex, on Rama IV Rd, directly linked to Samyan Station (Exit 2), on the MRT. Conveniently for the spa-going shopper, this mall also provides a shuttle service to Siam BTS Station, plenty of parking, and proximity to the Srirat and Chalerm Mahanakhon expressways.

As a spa enthusiast, I felt duty-bound, to try out this new establishment. My compulsion was instantly rewarded upon arrival, with a warm, smiling reception, followed by a cold towel and refreshingly chilled butterfly pea drink, before being presented with the tempting spa menu.

Body massages and scrubs can be complemented by water treatments (aka baths), while there are facial options for different purposes and skin types. Skin Fitness is custom design for men (THB 2,200++), while the Gold & Collagen treatment is aimed at restoring a youthful complexion. For a particularly Thai-inspired experience, I opted for one of the specialty retreats, called the Samyan Market Charm (THB 3,200++/2hrs), comprising a 30-minute body scrub and 90-minute Namm Spa signature massage. Inspired by Thai desserts, found at the area’s Samyan fresh market, the scrub ingredients include the likes of palm sugar, dried coconut, coconut milk and pandan leaf, together with oatmeal. This provides not only a flavourful aroma, but also gentle, but thorough, and nourishing exfoliation.

My choice of massage oil for the ensuing body massage was one of three proposed for my repose: Chill (waterlily, mint patchouli, rose), Fresh (eucalyptus, bergamot) and Energise (orange and bergamot). The latter spoke loudest to me, but had an incredibly relaxing effect, when combined with the expert massage technique combination, employed in the signature massage.

Thai, Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) and Abhyanga (from Ayurvedic practice) techniques were blended to produce an intensely relaxing and profoundly effect massage. If you like a medium to strong experience, then this is most definitely the ticket! The massage offers balancing of energy, deep pressure application and long soothing strokes, to release muscle tension.

From arriving at Namm Spa and being guided through my consultation, to every aspect of my treatment, including assistance from my spa therapist and her well-trained care, attention and diligence, I remained thoroughly impressed. The treatment room was thoughtfully equipped, with a private shower, and I was advised before being introduced to my therapist to visit the lavatory in the mall, since there would be no WC in the treatment room. However, this is not unusual in a mall spa, as space is at a premium. Post-treatment, in the relaxation lounge area, my outdoor shoes awaited me, as well as a traditional Thai dessert and hot herbal tea, plus a feedback form.

Would I recommend Namm Spa? Whole-heartedly! Will I be back? Absolutely! As well as the body and facial treatment rooms mentioned above, Namm Spa has a Thai massage room, reclining foot massage chairs, and an incredibly impressive-looking, dedicated nail spa. If manis, pedis, gels and polishes are your thing, then take a look at their nail spa menu too.
